History Of Guruvayur Temple

The presiding god of the Guruvayur Temple is Guruvayurappan (Vishnu, worshipped as his symbol Krishna). The central icon is a four-outfitted standing Vishnu conveying the conch Panchajanya, the disk Sudarshana Chakra, the mace Kaumodaki, and a lotus with a Holy basil laurel. This image represents the magnificent type of Vishnu as revealed to Krishna’s parents Vasudeva and Devaki around the hour of Krishna’s birth. Worship continues as per schedules set somewhere near Adi Shankara and later composed officially in the Tantric manner, the inter-religious spiritual development that emerged in medieval India, by Chennas Narayanan Nambudiri (born in 1427). The Chennas Nambudiris are the innate tantris (high priest) of the Guruvayur Temple.

The temple is overseen by Guruvayur Devaswom by the Government of Kerala. The main celebrations of this temple are the 10-day celebration in the Malayalam month of Kumbham beginning with flag raising on Pooyam star, Shri Krishna Janmashtami (Birthday of Lord Krishna) in the period of Chingam, Ekadasi (eleventh day) in the shukla paksha (splendid fortnight) in the month of Vrischikam, called as Guruvayur Ekadasi and Vishu on the first day of the period of Medam. The temple’s sub-gods are Ganapathi, Ayyappan and Bhagavathi, and there are two sub-temples every, one for Ganapathi and the other for Nagadevata close by the temples.

One of its imitation temples is Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple situated at Mayur Vihar in Delhi. The temple is devoted to Shri Krishna, who is worshipped as Guruvayurappan, the divinity of the well known Shri Krishna Temple in Guruvayur Town in the state of Kerala. This temple is most loved by the Malayalis and Tamilians.
